I'll trade you all my dots in SA for Vlad, Que and Dakar. Hesitant to go through with your half of the deal? I'll make it easy for you, and take those building centers by force. You needn't move out of them; I'll push you out and annihilate the purposeless units. How about a similar deal for Dave? China needs Malay if it is to win much ground in Indonesia/Australia. Nigeria isn't all that convenient for you, is it? Give me Mla and Nig for Som and Bra. What? I already promised Bra to Konrad? Well, fight him for it! Paul Rauterberg: Konrad! What are you going to do with all those idle units in Europe? Keep them around for further removals as you're driven from Asia and Africa? Have Dave convoy them to America? Force-feed them to Iberia? Dave Partridge: Convoy. Now there's an idea. I am now announcing the formation of the ONE and Only Convoy Corporation. We will convoy your armies anywhere in the world (not responsible for armies that fail to report to duty after landing at one of our home ports due to the massive parties that greet homecoming ships) for the low low price of 1 center per 3 convoys. Sign up now! Paul Rauterberg: Konrad says that he wants to see proof in the pudding. He asks that you convoy A Bav-Diego for a hard-earned vacation. I'm a little peeved that he didn't take me up on my generous offer to give him refuge in Uganda, where his lone army could have blended in with the other monkeys. Dave Partridge: Certainly, no problem. You won't mind parking your fleets in their home ports while we set up the convoy route will you? Paul Rauterberg: Oh, I wouldn't be greatly discomfited if the route was via: Eng-EAO-Can-Mao-Sea-Sio. I would even contribute my F Can to the convoy. Of course, after Konrad's vacaton was over he'd have to leave using his own resources. Swimming comes to mind. Harold Reynolds: On the topic of a better (more balanced) set of 3-country alliances, I think that the only way to achieve a proper balance is to make sure that the countries are actually poor "natural" allies so that there are no "blocks". That is, neighbouring powers shouldn't be allied. For example, Russia/Portugal/France, Ottoman/Spain/England, China/Austria/Netherlands. Comments? Dave Partridge: Let's see. Pacific: Haw/Mal/Man makes a strong block for OSE China/Tah/Mel is a strong counter from CAN Ala/Vla gives RPF some hope of holding on in the north Pretty good North America Ala/Que for RPF Flo for CAN Mex for OSE South America Sur for CAN Bra for RPF Ecu for OSE Balances pretty well Africa Dak/Cap for RPF Nig/Som for OSE (+ Ottoman, no threat to Som, moving into Egy) Ang for CAN Looks like OSE has the edge, but not too bad. The Ottoman/Som group is strong Europe/Med Looks pretty balanced. Spain caught between PF, and AN should put pressure on F, although R will also put pressure on AN. Asia Goa with Russia, China alone, looks pretty balanced. This might be the best bet for 3x3x3. Dueling is still more balanced though (<: (Ted Miller used to run a tournament of Duel Diplomacy that was a lot of fun, as you can tell, I'm partial to it.) Paul Rauterberg: In my first game of Colonia, my A/N alliance was strongly balanced even against Dave's C/O. If AN also had C for an ally, they could be pretty rough on the Sultan in his homeland.... (When I say "my A/N", of course, I'm not mentioning my Dutch ally (Gene Prosnitz) nor, with "Dave's C/O" his Ottoman partner John Powers. I did this only for purposes of discussion in the current company.) Dave Partridge: True, but the addition of Spain, which secures the southern border from Somalia should help a bit. And the pressure from Malay/Manila should keep China looking to the seas more than trying to press west. Without Manila to worry about, Malay can push armies north rather quickly. Since Russia and Goa are also guaranteed not to be allies, I don't see that China is going to come hit Ottoman too fast. Interestingly enough, in my first game of Colonia, I ended up in a two way O/S draw. And Fletcher Christian was C/E/S vs A/R, so we seem to have a pretty good variation.
