Game Notes:
1) HELP, PLEASE, would someone volunteer to be a standby for this game? I've decided to hold the game one more deadline. I have a player who is missing (it isn't much of a secret which one, Gene has been in the hospital again) and no standbys to call. I have orders on file for everyone else. I presume that Gene is not feeling up to getting orders in. Here is what we're going to do. At the next deadline, if I don't have orders from Gene he is going to go in as voting for the two draw proposals below (if both somehow pass, the smallest one will hold sway) and if neither pass and I don't have a standby volunteer then Austria will go into CD. I don't know what else to do. Orders and votes for Spring MAY be made conditional on whether or not Austria is in CD. Obviously, I hope Gene feels better very, very soon - not because of the game, but just because I hope he can beat this!
2) We'll have a slightly altered map next time.
3) The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) proposed draw and the concession to Spain are still on the table for Spring to be voted on. Again, I want to emphasize, that a few issues ago I said: "Michael Lowrey tells me that you need only 102 centers or 3/4 approval to get a draw to pass in this, and I believe 50 centers is required for a win. Forgive me if this sounds "weird" since anyone except Dave Partridge theoretically could be voted out of a draw. Clarifications or comments would be welcome." I had some comments and clarification and want to emphasize that these ARE the rules we are playing under, as they are the standard rules for this variant.
4) I have a personal note from Harold that I'm going to stick in here as press...
Press:
(CHINA): I wasn't allowed to watch the World Cup finals - the Masters started screaming because Blues Clues was "more important", so I had to hear it on the radio. Too bad about the outcome - I kind of wanted Brazil to get clobbered. Oh well. I'm sure they're celebrating in the Portuguese parts of town (and it's a really hot day, and there's a garbage strike on...) I was sorry to hear of the death of Bob Acheson. I've been hearing about a lot of cancer-related deaths recently for some reason. Just this morning I heard about Rosemary Clooney's passing from lung cancer. I wonder if Biography will run something on her this week... ((Yes, this game has been pretty hard hit by illness and death. I hope we can somehow get out of that mode next issue.))
In the search for Berry Renken - I was somewhat surprised to read the "proposal" - I too was a Blues subber, played some of the games (including a Blind Dip as Germany and several of the word games) and even GM'ed a Fuzzy Borders game in it. For some reason, I didn't think that it had a very large "circulation", but obviously I was wrong. I too would love to know what happened to him. I can't help wondering if the Y2K thing was not just a good excuse for him to throw it in, having gotten tired of running it? I have no idea, but I hope he's OK... ((See another comment on Berry up above...))
